Description
A sermon for the Fourth Sunday of Lent.
+++
The season of Lent can feel heavy as we focus on how we ought to be condemned for our sins. Today's readings give us extra clear comfort that God has compassion on sinners and comforts us when we feel the most condemned.

"Evangelize" and "evangelism" are big words. They are church-y words. But we don't need to shy away from them. In fact, Saint Paul tells us in a simple way that God has called us to live out those words.

God's People Recognize the Savior in Their Presence
Description
Sermon for the Third Sunday after Epiphany
+++
The people in Jesus' hometown had a hard time recognizing him as the Savior. How do we recognize that the Savior is in our presence?
(Pastor Wayne Shevey, who serves at Wisconsin Lutheran College, was our guest preacher.)
Description
The Lord has an unexpected promise for you based on what Jesus has come to do for you. The Lord promises to delight in you now and for all eternity.
God has worked repentance in us so that we have turned from sin and to his forgiveness. Now, we want to show him our thanks and produce good works that line up with our faith. But what exactly are those things that we should do? The prophet Zephaniah gives us some things to think about.
Description
Jesus is the King of heaven above, the rocks below, and sinners in between. While he will get the praise no matter what, we gladly give him the praise because he gives us his righteousness.
Description
You are waiting for the Last Day when your Lord Jesus Christ returns. But is that all you're supposed to do? Saint Jude encourages us to do some other things while we wait.
Description
When you know the grace that Jesus himself enriches you with, then you know you are rich enough to give to others and to be saved from sin and death.

Jesus Clears Up the Confusion between Status vs. State
Description
Because of Christ, we have a holy status before God. Sometimes, though, the situation we find ourselves in makes us wonder how we stand before God. Jesus clears up that confusion for now and enternally.

Description
We say that something "has your name all over it" when that object is supposedly destined to be yours. In the same way, we are assured that just as Jesus called out Lazarus' name and he was raised from the dead, so he will put our names on our own personal resurrections.
Description
You know them as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. But when they were born, they had different names -- names which helped them stay steadfast in the face of persecution. In the same way, your name -- Christian -- enables you to stay steadfast.
Description
When we're stunned by others' cluelessness, we wonder out loud, "What are we doing here?" When we look at who we are as sinners, we wonder out loud, "What are we doing here?" The answer is found in Jesus, the Son of Man, who did not come to be served but to serve.

Jesus' Financial Teaching Leads to Heavenly Treasure
Description
You can get financial advice from a lot of people. But only Jesus gives divine financial teaching. What's more, he gives his teaching without a fee and his teaching leads to free heavenly treasure!
Description
Even as Saint Paul gives many commands about marriage and the family, he doubles down on something else -- the love that Christ gives the church through his death and through baptism. That's what perfects families and keeps them united.
Description
As we celebrate the Festival of St. Michael and All Angels, we see that believers are on a completely different trajectory than Satan -- first, because of the angels and also, most importantly, because of the Lamb.
Description
Prayer should not be some last ditch effort when we feel our weakest. Rather, it should be rooted in the strength we know we always have in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Description
Jesus has the power to do miraculous healings. But how he goes about that is strictly up to him. We simply trust in his power and love because we believe that he does all things well.
Description
Jesus' teaching that he is the Bread of Life offends some and bores others. But what does it do for those who accept it with faith? It gives life -- true life and eternal life.

In the days of Jeremiah, Israel's poltiical situation was totally messed up and people were living in terror and fear. Worse yet, the people weren't getting the spiritual care they needed. So, God promised to raise up someone who would make things right for God's people of all time.
