Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
Sermon Text: Proverbs 30:4,5
Other Readings: Mark 4:35-41 and Acts 27:13-26
- Compared to God, how smart and strong are you?
- What is special about the word of God? Look at Proverbs 30:5; Mark 4:39,40; and Genesis chapter 1.
- How does the answer to question #2 impact the way we view the word of God as it is heard in worship?
- God’s word is meant to be listened to and for us to take refuge in it. What’s a Bible passage or story that you are finding refuge in right now?
- Only God gathers up the wind in the hollow of his hand. Only God wraps up all the waters of the world in his cloak. You are not smart or strong at all compared to God. Trust him, not yourself—not at all.
- Proverbs 30:5 tells us that the word of God is “flawless,” that is, it has no errors. Mark chapter 4 and Genesis chapter 1 show us that the word of God has power. When God speaks, things happen as he wants.
- We view worship as something during which God does something powerful. As his word is read, sung, and proclaimed, we recognize that he is creating a stronger faith, just as he created the world by his word and creating silence from the boat.
- Answers will vary based on personal perspective. It’s a blessing from God that he gives us so much to take to heart!
