 Sermon Text: Matthew 28:16-20

Other Readings: Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 and 1 Corinthians 2:6-16

  1. Our text says that some disciples “doubted” (v. 17). That is, some had trouble recognizing Jesus in his glorified, resurrected body and/or had trouble putting together everything that had just happened. Name a story or teaching in Scripture that sometimes makes you pause or hesitate as you try to process it.

  2. Jesus said that we are to learn and to teach “everything” he has said and commanded. What does that tell us about the importance of all of God’s Word?

  3. Jesus promises to use his power to bless our Christian teaching and promises to be with us as we do it. What do we know that the Holy Spirit will do? Read 1 Corinthians 1:9-12.

  4. Who is someone who had a big impact on you as they taught you God’s Word? (It could be a parent, a Sunday School teacher, a pastor, a mentor, et al.) Say a prayer to God, thanking him for putting that person in your life.

  1. Answers will vary based on personal perspective. This side of heaven, we will have trouble fully understanding everything Scripture teaches us. So, doubts and hesitations may be natural. We should guard against rejecting them and should pray, “Lord, increase our faith” (Luke 17:5).

  2. All of God’s Word is important and has benefits for us. While some truths are perhaps more important to know (e.g., Jesus is true God and our Savior vs. the size of Noah’s ark), we want to know God’s Word more and more because it has important benefits for our faith.

  3. We know that God the Holy Spirit will work through God’s Word to teach the faith and strengthen it. We don’t have to put that pressure on ourselves.

  4. Answers will vary by personal experience. Praise God for putting those people in our lives!
