Third Sunday after Pentecost

 Sermon Text: Matthew 9:35 - 10:8

Other Readings: Numbers 27:15-23 and 1 Corinthians 4:1-7

  1. In what sense were the crowds “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (v. 37)?

  2. Give some specific examples of how people nowadays are “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

  3. What did Jesus do during his earthly ministry (v. 35)? What were the apostles to do on this occasion (vv. 5-8)? How is gospel ministry at Living Water similar or different?

  4. Jesus tells us to pray that God would “send workers into his harvest field” (v. 38). Can you think of anyone at Living Water or within your social circle that you could encourage for public ministry? How might you go about encouraging them?

  5. Jesus encourages us to pray about the harvest that the Lord has. Think of someone whom you know who is either not a disciple of Jesus or who is wandering from their faith. Say a prayer to the Lord of the harvest for them.

  1. Though the people had spiritual leaders like priests, Pharisees, and Sadducees, these men were not pointing souls to God’s free grace and compassion. Rather, these spiritual leaders were teaching them to get right with God by obeying the law, and that never brings spiritual rest.

  2. Examples will vary based on personal observations.

  3. Jesus performed miracles and helped people physically, but he especially preached and taught God’s word. In the same way, the apostles sparingly did miracles, but they especially preached and taught God’s word. While God could work miracles through us nowadays, he has emphasized that our ministry is, above all, to preach and teach the gospel, along with administering his sacraments.

  4. Answers will vary based on personal observations. God bless your encouragement and those whom you have in mind!
